Community Guidelines

Effective: April 16, 2026

Hate City exists for one purpose: letting you complain about the things that frustrate you. These guidelines ensure that complaints stay constructive and the platform remains safe for everyone.

The Golden Rule

Criticize actions, not identities. You can hate a product, a policy, a performance, or a public statement. You cannot target someone for who they are.

What's Allowed

Personal opinions and experiences with products and services
Criticism of public figures' public actions, statements, and professional performance
Commentary on political policy, voting records, and campaign conduct
Strong language expressing frustration (within reason)
Satire, humor, and sarcasm about public topics
Sharing photos of defective products or poor service experiences

What's Not Allowed

Hate Speech

Content that promotes hatred or violence against people based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or national origin. This applies to all categories including criticism of public figures.

Threats & Violence

Any content that threatens, incites, or glorifies violence against any person or group. This includes direct threats, coded threats, and encouraging others to commit violence.

Harassment & Bullying

Sustained, targeted abuse of any individual. This includes coordinated campaigns against a person, repeated unwanted contact, and content designed to intimidate.

Doxxing

Sharing private personal information such as home addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, financial information, or private photos of any person without their consent. This includes employees of companies you're complaining about.

Defamation

Knowingly false statements of fact presented as truth. Express opinions using opinion language ("I think," "in my experience," "I believe") rather than stating unverified claims as facts. Unverified accusations of criminal activity are not permitted.

CSAM & Sexual Content

Any child sexual abuse material is strictly prohibited and will be reported to NCMEC. Sexually explicit content of any kind is not permitted.

Spam & Manipulation

Automated posting, fake accounts, astroturfing (fake reviews), and coordinated inauthentic behavior are prohibited.

Category-Specific Rules

Products

Rants must reflect genuine personal experience. Competitor astroturfing (posting fake complaints about competitors to promote your own product) is prohibited.

Services

You may name companies and describe your experience. Do not share the personal names or contact information of individual employees.

Celebrities

Criticism must relate to the public figure's public persona — their work, public statements, endorsements, and professional conduct. Attacks on their family members, unverified claims about their private life, and comments about protected characteristics are not allowed.

Politicians

Commentary on policy positions, voting records, public statements, and campaign conduct is encouraged. Threats (even "joking" ones) are strictly prohibited. Attacks on politicians' family members are not allowed. Misinformation about election processes is not permitted.

Enforcement

Violations result in escalating consequences:

Content removal with explanation
Warning for first-time or minor violations
Temporary suspension (24 hours, 7 days, or 30 days) for repeated or serious violations
Permanent ban for severe violations (threats, CSAM, doxxing) or persistent repeat offenses

All moderation decisions can be appealed once through the in-app appeal process.

Reporting

If you see content that violates these guidelines, use the Report button on any rant, comment, or profile. Select the appropriate reason and provide any additional details. Reports are reviewed within 24 hours.
